The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is pleased to invite you to the IP Finance Dialogue: The Value of Intangible Assets held on 13 May, 2025.
This year’s event will bring together creators and innovators, standard setters, valuation and accounting professionals, investors, policymakers, as well as voices from academia, to explore how intangible assets, particularly intellectual property (IP), can be more effectively leveraged to attract investment and secure financing for businesses.
As modern, innovation-driven business models become the norm, intangible assets are increasingly recognized as critical to business success. While progress is being made, important considerations remain in how these assets are valued, how financial information related to them is disclosed and interpreted, and how they can be used for financing -particularly for startups, scaleups, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
Through focused panel discussions and the presentation of new research findings, the program will explore how IP finance can serve as a catalyst for growth in the creative and innovation-driven economy, highlighting emerging trends, best practices, and financing mechanisms
Event highlights include:
- Panel I: Perspectives on Best Practices to Support IP Finance. This session will explore best practices for building robust IP finance ecosystems. Panelists will address valuation standards, investment criteria, and policy tools that support the reliable use of IP in financing, drawing on insights from public institutions, valuation bodies, and finance and advisory professionals.
- Panel II: Transparency in IP – Enhancing Intangible Asset Disclosure. This panel will explore how greater transparency in the reporting of intangible assets, particularly IP, can enhance trust and support better decision-making by users and preparers of financial reports. Standard-setters and accounting professionals will share their perspectives on evolving disclosure practices and expectations around IP.
- Panel III: The Value of Intangibles – The Role of Valuation in IP Finance. Valuation plays a central role in unlocking the financial potential of IP. This panel will examine how valuation professionals can support the use of IP in financing, particularly for SMEs and innovation-driven businesses. Experts will share insights on enhancing trust and advancing the role of valuation within IP finance ecosystems.
- Furthermore, there will be dedicated sessions by selected experts from academia and the creative sector who will present findings from two recent studies. The first examines international practices in the disclosure of intangible assets, offering insights on emerging trends. The second explores the role of IP finance in the music industry, highlighting perspectives from creators, rights holders, and financial actors. These presentations will be complemented by commentaries from innovators who have actively leveraged IP financing in real-world context.
The hybrid event will be held in-person at WIPO Headquarters and online. Registration is free and open to the public.
